While the past couple days in Winchester, MA were pretty fun, things were about to get a lot better. I spent Day 3 chilling (literally) with my friend Ron, Day 4 with my group of friends from elementary school, Day 5 travelling to New York, and Days 6-8 visiting the sites of New York City and seeing shows on Broadway.
On Day 3, Ron and I went to see True Grit, which we both agreed was a great film that is worth the price of admission. It was after the movie when our day got a bit more interesting. We walked out of the theater and into a huge snow storm, which was a bit of an annoyance for Ron, especially since he was driving. For me, however, I was loving being in this winter wonderland, and couldn’t get enough of it. Feeling the crunch of the snow beneath my boots as I walked through it is something I’ll never forget.
On Day 4, I called up my group of friends (Robert, Matt, and Mark), and they were all snowed in due to the previous nights storm. Fortunately, road conditions cleared up by late afternoon, so that’s when we were finally able to meet up. When we did, it was epic, because I hadn’t seen these guys since March of 2004. I had a great time catching up with all of them, and I’m glad that they are all doing really well now.
On Day 5, most of my day was spent on the bus to New York. Once there, I got checked into my hotel room and immediately started exploring the city. Around the corner from my hotel was Broadway, so I decided to check out Green Day’s American Idiot musical, which was a fantastic show.
On Day 6, I visited the Natural History Museum and attended the much talked about Spider-man: Turn off the Dark musical. The museum was very fun, educational, and I really enjoyed checking out all of the exhibits. The Spider-man musical was my favorite part of the day. I really enjoyed the music, and the on-stage and in-air action was simply amazing to see. I would definitely recommend checking out this play, whether or not you’re a fan of the wall crawler.
On Day 7, the most exciting thing I did was see the Rock of Ages musical, which was just amazing. I really liked how they integrated 80’s era rock music into the story. It is a show that is well deserving of all its accolades.
Day 8 was New Years Eve, the last day of 2010, and I spent most of the day walking around in the snow in Central Park. I also went on a tour of 30 Rockefeller Center, a.k.a the NBC building. Later that night, I tried, however unsuccessfully, to get back to Times Square. Unfortunately, the police had blocked it off due to it being at capacity. I was told that there were more than a million people there. I was, however, able to see a sliver of the ball drop during the last seconds of 2010.
Looking back, going home to Massachusetts, and to New York for the first time, were adventures and experiences I will never forget.
