Movie Review: Angels & Demons

There are a lot of great movies hitting theaters this summer and, before I saw it, Angels & Demons did not seem like it would be nearly as good as Star Trek and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I felt this way because it’s prequel, The Da Vinci Code, was a bit underwhelming, especially after all the hype it recieved before its release in 2006. I am actually happy to say that I was completely wrong in my preconceptions of what will possibly be this years most captivating film.

Movie Review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a movie that comic book geeks around the world, including myself, have been waiting a long time to see. In my opinion, this movie does not disappoint since it has a great story and all the action one would expect from an X-Men film. What I like most about this movie is that it not only delves into Wolverines past, but it also introduces the audience to a whole team of new mutants such as Gambit, Deadpool, and Wraith. However, X-Men fans have found a number of inconsistencies with this film as it relates to the comic books its derived from. In my opinion, these inconsistencies don’t really take anything away from the movie as whole since it is filled with some great action sequences and tells a great story.

Movie Review: Dragonball Evolution

I just do not want to believe what I just saw. The Dragonball really was as bad as everyone says it is. The main reason for this is because Chow Yun Fat, the Executive Producer, decided to gear it towards the children’s demographic. The whole time I was watching the movie, I felt as though it would have been much better had I been 13 years old again. What’s even worse is that the movie did not seem to have any of the epicness the anime series had. The few fights scenes that were in the film were inappropriately short. In fact, the final battle between Goku and Piccolo ended kind of abruptly with Piccolo just falling over dead. Very disappointing.

Movie Review: Fast and Furious

The fourth movie in the Fast & Furious series began similarly to that of the first movie in the series. Dominic Torretto and his crew hijack a fuel tanker in the Dominican Republic. However, I was surprised to see that Hahn was part of Dom’s crew, seeing as how he died in the previous movie in the series, Tokyo Drift. We later find out that Hanh will be moving to Tokyo where, “there’s some interesting stuff going on.” That means that this film is not the fourth in the series’ timeline. Rather it’s the third.

As a fan of the entire Fast & Furious series, I really enjoyed this installment. This film reunited the cast of the original film and brought the series back to its roots on the streets of LA. The races were really fun to watch, just like when I first saw the series’ original movie. No race is complete without crashes, and this movie had plenty of them. The story in this film is similar to that of the series second installment, 2 Fast 2 Furious, in that fast cars are used in effort to take down a major drug cartel that is smuggling narcotics from Mexico to California.

Movie Review: Push

pushposter006

I checked this flick out last weekend, and I don’t know why more people aren’t talking about it. If you are a fan of Heroes, especially this season, then you should definetly check out Push, it’s right up your alley. In a nutshell, Push is about group of people with powers evading a governmental organization, The Division, that wants to use them as part of the worlds most powerful army. It stars Chris Evans as Nick Gant, a pusher who can telepathically move stuff, Dakota Fanning as Cassie Holmes, a watcher who can see the future, and Djimon Hounsou as  Henry Carver, a much more powerful pusher than Nick. This movie has some great action scenes in which Nick and Cassie’s team pushers and watchers take on not only the Division, but also an Asian crime family. I really enjoyed the fight scene that pits the Division against said Asian family. It may not be the best movie out there right, but if you watch Heroes, you’ll love Push.

The Forbidden Kingdom

After seeing the trailer for this flick, I had little idea of what the plot actually entailed, but it seemed like it would be another great martial arts epic. That is exactly what it is. If you enjoy movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and House of Flying Daggers, then you will love The Forbidden Kingdom. The story involves a lost traveler who must return a staff to its rightful owner, the imprisoned Monkey King. During his journey, he is joined by two martial arts masters (Jackie Chan and Jet Li)  and a young lady who teach him how to fight before going into battle against the Jade Warlord and his army. This movie also has some cool plot twists that you may or may not see coming. All in all, The Forbidden Kingdom is awesome movie.

My Verdict: See it in Theaters

Street Kings review

Keanu Reeves, Forrest Whittaker

When I went to see Street Kings, I was expecting to see a flick based on the common “Cops n Robbers” storyline with some awesome gun battles. As an action flick junkie, I was kind of disappointed, and as a regular moviegoer, I felt as though it would have been better to rent this one. The plot of the film was average at best. It’s about a detective (Reeves) who works his way through LA’s criminal hierarchy to identify those that killed his former partner. Theres one gun battle in the movie, maybe two if you count the murder scene. The rest is just talk. However, there is a good twist at the end that you may not see coming. All in all, I was expecting a lot more from this flick.

My verdict: Rent It
