Yahoo/AOL Merger – F**k Off MS

Theres been some real drama going on between Yahoo and Microsoft lately. Here’s the story thus far:

  1. Microsoft tries to buyout Yahoo for $44.6 Billion.
  2. Yahoo rejects Microsofts offer
  3. Microsoft retailiates by threatening to take their case directly to Yahoos shareholders and even start a proxy battle in which they would elect another set of directors to Yahoo’s board of directors.
  4. Yahoo still rejects Microsofts offer.
  5. Yahoo closes in on a deal to buy AOL from TimeWarner, which would counter their declining shares.

We’ll see where it goes from here, but it certainly is an interesting story to follow.

Week 1

After being introduced to everyone in the IT department, Rapana issued me my identificaiton card for the internship program and instructed me to use it to clock in and outt everyday during my internship. Once of my first tasks this week was to head up to Rooms 201-208 and install DVD-ROM drives into the classroom computers and then confirm that they are in proper working condition. My next major project for the week came after Rapana gave my UAT account IT level permissions. This allowed me to grant read and write permission to the Oracle program for the students and instructors user groups. Later on in the week, Brian and I installed a newe machine in the security desk and he showed me how to get it setup so that the monitoring program was fully functional. I alsos accompanied Brian to a consultation with an instructor who was having performance issues with a computer in the green-screen room. After the instructor explained the problem to us, we told him that we would look into it soon and left.

What’s Windows 7?

If you keep up with the modern computing world at all, then you’ve at least heard about Windows 7, the next iteration of Microsofts OS. As of right now, it is slated for a January 2010 release, three years after Vista’s release. The blogs I follow don’t offer any details about what the next version of Windows will be like, but it came up as a discussion topic in my Network Defense class today. We predicted that Windows 7 will be a more online-based operating system. You may still have to install it from physical media, or you might be able to download the upgrade, but the OS won’t take up much room on your hard drive. It will only install the files needed for the operating system to run and all programs will be web-based, much like Google Docs and Google Spreadsheets. This will make accessing your files while on the go completely effortless. However, Windows definitely won’t be the first OS to be completlely web-based. There are actually plenty of web-OS’s already out there. PCMag.com has a good list of them here:
